My Krump Journey

HYPEOUT aka LADY CANNON

My name is HypeOut aka. Lady Cannon. I only have one previous krump name and that is Lady Badraw.

It was in the beginning of 2017 that I began to be interested in krump as a freestyle dance and started to join krump sessions with Badraw Fam, the only krump fam in Jakarta at that time.

That same year I took a dance trip to Japan which was meant to be focused on learning hiphop and joining hiphop events. While I was there I joined a Krump session in Osaka and from there the krumpers encouraged me to join a rookie krump event over the weekend. Merely joining session was nerve-racking and so the thought of joining a Krump battle was terrifying for me. Pushing through my fear, I joined anyway and was shocked when I made it to Top 8.

This was mind-blowing and hugely frustrating for me all at the same time. I had previously focused in hiphop for 5 years and traveled all the way to Japan to compete in that style and couldn’t get past prelims in hiphop events. And here on the other hand, I barely understood the basics of krump and I made it to Top8 in this rookie battle.

It felt like I was being handed a golden opportunity that would slip away if I wasn’t quick enough. It was on this trip that I decided I was going to be a krumper and straight away told Badraw I wanted to be in Badraw fam. He said he would consider it. They caged me when I returned to Jakarta and I was given my first krump name, Lady Badraw. This was 5 months into my krump journey.

Ever since then I’ve traveled to Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Thailand (Krumpire Asia), and Japan (KOB 10) chasing krump events and just trying to experience more of this style. I’ve never traveled so much for dance in my life and its been crazy to experience Krump in these different places! The vibe and energy of this dance cannot be matched and I love the people that come with this culture!

Aside from krump in battles and events, I also love creating concepts for the stage and videoclips and one of my favorite projects that I’ve been involved in is ‘Suppress’ an underwater Krump video project by Badraw. This whole visual takes place underwater which seems to represent a state of being of safety and calmness but actually this is a place that can house suffocating pain and overwhelming pressure.
